My Process

As a preface, I generally start my design with the world of the work - this might be the set, or diving into the back stories of the characters. My creative process is to first encourage the artistic team to articulate their unique vision for the project. Generally, we would discuss; the themes to be explored, the style of the work and what are the desired emotions or reactions the viewing of the work will evoke from the audience. A collaborative approach of research, informal and formal presentation would follow with particular cognisance to the fluid nature of the creative process. With that being said, a structured approval process for significant and timely elements is important to ensure a successful work.

Generally (although overlapping) the next stage is for more technical aspects such as what sort of space is the work being presented in, how will the audience interact with the performers, and a detailed timeline should be created to ensure all items have been allowed for.

Although a clear process is useful to ensuring a consistent understanding throughout the artistic team, understanding the unknown items in the design process is essential, and often the most beautiful ideas come from momentary sparks of inspiration. Encouraging a continuing conversation and collaborative culture will always result in a good balance between those ideas born through long term planning, and those that are born in the moment.

The above process is purposefully adaptable to each unique project and always begins with a brief discussion to better define its structure.
